A tree-lined "Village Green" sits at the heart of the New England-style village, which resembles many communities established in the days of the Connecticut Western Reserve. This town center is a venue for a wide range of community activities. Canfield's strict zoning regulations prohibit large signage and overgrown lawns, which is sure to preserve the city's charming small-town atmosphere.
In 1992 Canfield city residents, although surrounded completely by Canfield Township, voted to secede from the township. This motion created two separate governmental entities — one a municipality, the other a township. Both cooperate with each other for the mutual benefit of their citizens and share fire protection service, roads and highways, schools, parks, and other physical assets.
Canfield Township encompasses a total of 26 square miles with Canfield City at the center. The townshiphad a population of 16,164 people at the 2010 census, 8,649 of whom lived in the unincorporated portions of the township. In 2005 Canfield was rated the 82nd best place to live in the United States by Money Magazine.
The Canfield Local School District serves the city of Canfield, Canfield Township, and a small portion of Boardman and Beaver Townships. The district ranks "excellent" with the Ohio Department of Education, and is ranked 12th of 614 schools throughout the state of Ohio.
Canfield continues to grow with new housing developments throughout the city and township providing a stark contrast to the homes and buildings in the central city, much of which are well over a century old. While the growth is embraced, the family farms and countryside that Canfield was once known for is being diminished.
