Springfield Township Ohio

Springfield Township is located in the southeast corner of Mahoning County along the Pennsylvania border covering a total area of 34.9 square miles. The 2010 census found 6,703 people in the township, which represents a population growth of 7.28% since 2000. Although Springfield Township is primarily rural and farmlands, over the past decade new housing developments have been built in and around New Middletown, as well as a surge of high-end homes and villas built around Evans Lake.

Evans Lake is a private lake owned by Aqua Ohio, a subsidiary of Aqua America. It is located about five miles from the Pennsylvania border at an elevation of 1,071 feet and a surface area of 582 acres. The lake is used for drinking water, fishing and recreation.

Springfield Township was settled in approximately 1801 by Peter and Margaret Musser and officially became a Township in 1803.There are three towns within the Township -- Petersburg, which was founded in 1810 by Peter Musser, Jr.; New Springfield, which was founded in 1826 by Abraham Christ; New Middletown, which was founded in 1829 by Samuel Moore. The Village of New Middletown was incorporated in 1913 and remains a political entity within the Township.

Springfield Township is served by the Springfield Local School District with three facilities: Springfield Elementary, Springfield Intermediate, and Springfield High School. The district schools have earned the "Excellent" rating by the Ohio Department of Education.
